AB 52 (Tribal Cultural Resources)

Learn about both the history and present vital communities of sovereign Native American Tribal Governments. Learn how to work effectively with Tribal Governments during the CEQA process to identify, avoid, preserve in place or mitigate Tribal Cultural Resources. Tribal participants will learn the key points in the CEQA process to influence project development. 

 Who Needs This Training?

Public agencies are required to consult with California Native American tribes on the Native American Heritage Commission’s (NAHC) consultation list, specifically those traditionally and culturally affiliated with the geographic area in which projects under CEQA are proposed.

It is essential to understand the history and modern reality of sovereign California Native American Tribal Governments, and the implications for cities and special districts and opportunities for government-to-government collaboration. These include economic development, water, and land use, effective engagement approaches, legal requirements for consultation regarding Tribal Cultural Resources during CEQA (AB 52), General Plan Updates (SB 18), NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA, and projects with a federal nexus (NHPA Section 106).
