The Water Education Foundation selected KMTG water associate attorney Hanspeter Walter to participate in its 2008 William R. Gianelli Water Leaders Class. This year-long program brings together young professionals working in water-related fields and educates them on current water issues. Fewer than twenty participants are selected each year from a diverse field of applicants.
The Water Leaders Program was created by the Water Education Foundation in 1997 to educate and inspire young working professionals and prepare them to take an active, cooperative approach to decision-making on water resource issues. Leading stakeholders and top policy-makers serve as mentors throughout the year to class members. Course participants attend classes, meetings and water tours. They also shadow and interview their mentors, and perform research on water related issues and present it to the Water Education Foundation Board of Directors.
Mr. Walter said he was thrilled to be selected for the Water Leaders Program. “Water Leaders has been a blast so far. I have met many eminent players in California’s water world and learned many new things. I respect my fellow water leaders and am amazed and thankful the Foundation got us all together for this exciting learning experience.”
Acceptance to the program is based on several factors including the individuals’ commitment to understanding water issues, an interest in seeking leadership roles on public boards and commissions, commitment to the community through volunteering, and the opportunity for advancement to key leadership roles within their own organization. Attendees include individuals from private business, education, non-profit organizations, public agencies and public interest groups.
